Mykonos island took its name from the son
of the King of Delos. History of Mykonos in the ancient years was absolute connected
to the history of Delos island. Due to mythology, Hercules, in one of his
twelve feats, fought and killed the Giants and then he threw them in the sea
where they turned into huge rocks, the island of Mykonos.
Residents of the island were great sailors
and they provided important support to the War of Independence by offering 22
ships, 500 members of the crew and about 150 canons to the Greek Revolution
against Turks. Manto Mavrogenous , a woman hero from Mykonos spend her fortune
to the Revolution and participated in the Filiki Etairia, the secret revolutionary
organization, and planed troops in order to revolt against the Turks in the
year 1822.
The years after the Greek Independence, the
economy of the island was destroyed, but later the island succeeded to earn
back its commercial strength and to restructure the economy by using the
textile as the main source of income for
mykonian houses. The Mykonian textile because of its high quality traded around
Greece and exported to many other countries.
In the early 1960s tourism in Mykonos flourished
as island became the favorite destination for artists and then for the hippies.
Nowadays Mykonos is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. This fact
made live cost in island more expensive, at least for the Greek data, and many Greek
entrepreneurs invested in island by building amazing complex of suites and villas.
Stores and dining places in Mykonos are
also offer high end services and products. But, the main attraction of the
