The Mani is the southern and central leg of
mainland Greece and can be reached within less than two hours by car. After
such a short trip, you’ll find yourself immersed in a different world, with
magnificent nature and a rich cultural heritage.
Finally, with a spirit of resilience,
national bravery, and defense, because of the especially hard fight the people
of Mani gave during the Greek War of Independence – the fortified tower houses
around Mani, such as the house of revolutionary General Mavromichali, attest to
this fact. Other impressive tower houses can be found by strolling around the
settlement of Vatheia. Also don’t miss Mani’s highest tower, the Sklavounakos
Tower in the village of Fourniata, built in 1821, which has six floors reaching
a height of 25m.
Visit the scenic coastal towns of Stoupa
and Kardamyli, where the well-known British author Patrick Leigh Fermor had his
home in the Outer Mani. For beautiful views, trek up to Agia Sophia Church above
Kardamyli and next visit the Mourtzinos tower and Dirou tower. Head all the way
south top explore Gerolimenas village and its next-door settlement of Porto
Kayio.
Next, visit the Deep Mani to see the
awe-inspiring Caves of Diros and visit the charming village of Areopoli above
Itylo Bay. Here, stop for a coffee or a bite in one of its charming kafeneia or
tavernas. Swim at the beautiful beaches of Ambelos, Marathos, Kokkala and Porto
Kayio. Drive all the way to the bottom tip, the southeast end of continental
Europe, to Cape Tainaron.
Wherever you decide to venture in the Mani
Peninsula, the area never ceases to impress, educate and transport you to
different parts of history, to experiencing the brazen natural elements and to
its start existence.
